A portfolio of pictures

Just had the most amazing two weeks at school – photographing a thousand images for my portfolio.
The only thing was that I had to choose 15 images, and they all had to be unedited.
So I really needed to work on understanding the cameras settings, manually.

For this amazing task, I’ve been wandering outside in windy, sunny and cold weather, as well as on the evening trying to shoot something amazing with creative lights in low light. I had no idea walking around in the city at night would be so much fun (have in mind that I really don’t like walking outside when the sun is gone. The city is a dangerous place these days…..)

But I had a lot of fun. And here are the 15 images I took, and a little description of each.

Exposure “dark on Dark”

“A pair of masculine glasses, you’ve got a good taste”. I’ve used a black backdrop, and had to use low aperture and a bigger shutter speed to let in a lot of light. Since it wasn’t enough, I had to use the ISO of 2000 as well.

Shutter speed 1/60  |  Aperture F/3.2  |  ISO 2000

“Freeze Moment”

“Everyday is a celebration”. Blowing confetti and freezing the moment with letting in less light in shutter speed. The aperture is low. because I wanted a blurred effect in the background. Iso is low to not overexpose in the outside weather.

Shutter speed 1/1000  |  Aperture F2.5  |  ISO 250

“Movement”

“The ghost in the tunnel”. This tunnel was an amazing spot for different photos. The shutter speed is slow, letting in a lot more light to slow the movement in the picture. I therefor had to go up on the aperture to have sharper details in both back and front. And to control the lightning.

Shutter speed 2.0  |  Aperture F/10  |  ISO 125

“Shallow Dept of field”

“Colorful candy”. The shallow dept of field is created with having a very low aperture of f/1.4. I also used a 50 mm lense, that gives a lot of dept in the image. And because of a handhold picture and a 50 mm lense, I had to use at least 1/80 in shutter speed to control the shaking.  The light is also more controlled with low ISO and by letting in less light with an lower shutterspeed.

Shutter speed 1/80  |  Aperture f/1.4  |  ISO 100

“Deep Dept of field”

“A magical sunset”.  In this photo I used a 16 mm lens, and wanted to capture the beautiful lightning from the sun in a very small and beautiful forest. I turned the Aperture to F/6.3 to se the details in the back more clearly. And I had to let in less light from the shutter speed to not over expose the lightning. The ISO at a low 200.

Shutter speed 1/50  |  Aperture F/6.3  |  ISO 200

“Low light”

“A for ALS”. This picture got a lot of meaning right away. The woman in the middle got ALS diagnosed this September. While being in that situation (like in the picture) she is now also looking at the A and thinking that it has no control over her happyness.

The light from the A creates a silhouette around her. It’s a clear shot taken in the mid evening outside. The shutter speed makes it clear and the low aperture let’s in more light. Because of the light in the A I didn’t need to go up in ISO.

Shutter speed 1/125  |  Aperture F/1.8  |  ISO 100

“Portrait in soft light”

“Mindfullness”. This portrait is taking outside in a very soft light. There is minimal shadows in the face, from her hair. This is shot with a 50 mm lens, giving it a stronger bokeh effect in the background.

Shutter speed 1/50  |  Aperture f/2.2  |  ISO 100

“creative light”

“The old christmas spirit”. The creative light photo was for me a really difficult task. I had a lot of options here, and some of them where really creative, but in my mind; Not quite where I wanted them to be.

And then, suddenly I remembered my really old fireplace.

It was made in the late 1800-1900 and is absolutely beautiful in it’s design. It has a unique cross design, presumably because Norway was a very Christian country at that time of the 18th-19th century. To make it more meaningful, or to be clearer, I placed a Christmas tree on the back of the pattern. Since Christmas can also be associated with Christianity.

I used a flashlight  and lit up the decorative fireplace.

It ended up being a really nice effect, and gave me some kind of royal Christmas vibe.

Shutter speed 1/30  |  Aperture F/2.0  |  ISO 250

“Rule of third”

“The fun is outside”. These days kids are using way to much time on electric devices. This photo is a reminder to get out and play. Find things in the nature and live. a little! The pinecone are in the focus and the photo is cropped so the boy and the pinecone fit the frame and the rule of third.

Shutter speed 1/40  |  Aperture F2.2  |  ISO 100

“Extreme composition”

“No fear of hights”. This photo is taken from the buttom and up – making the object (tower) look tall, big and bold. The tower takes the biggest space in the picture and is a good contrast to the sky.

It also helps that the ladder is far from straighten.

Shutter speed 1/250  |  Aperture F/14  |  ISO 800

“leading Lines”

The stairway to heaven – or maybe just the stairway to the bus stop. But who would know? The leading lines  makes it easy to follow the stairs up and towards something on the top.

Shutter speed 1/80  |  Aperture F/8.0  |  ISO 100

“Contrast”

“Be who you want to be!”. Who said a baby duck can’t hang out with the cool guyes? The contrast here is not necessarily the colors red vs yellow, but the meaning in the picture. Baby toys VS big boy toys. Or even a deeper meaning; Nobody puts baby in a corner, or you can become and be whoever you want to be. The main focus is therefor set at the duck, and the other cars are a bit blurry making the duck seem really clear, even when it’s all the way on it’s side.

Shutter speed 1/60  |  Aperture F/3.5  |  ISO 250

“Negative Space”

“The sound”. When all you can hear is the beautiful guitar tunes, it doesn’t matter what’s around or who plays. The music tells it’s story and thats why i chose the gutiar in a photo filled with negative space.

Shutterspeed 1/25  |  Aperture F2.5  |  ISO 160

“New perspective”

“A painting of the hard working citizen”.  Without the hardworking citizen, this city would not be so beautiful. This picture is framing the statue with autumn leaves, making it a natural frame and a new perspective. Because of the sunlight, I had to go up in the aperture, but still make sure that the lense was in focus.

Shutter speed 1/50  |  Aperture F/10  |  ISO 100

“A photograph is worth a thousand words”

“Lonely in a superhero suit”. This little fellow has lost his home and his owner. Leaving him alone on the fence, waiting for someone to pick him up and love him again. Imagine all the teddys that are lost in a world of fire and war.

Shutter speed 1/60  |  Aperture f/3.5  |  ISO 125

There you go, 15 images, 15 different stories and positions, settings and so on.

I really had a blast shooting these pictures. Can’t wait to learn more and to create more, be even more creative with graphic design, photoshoots and video. I just LOVE that I’ve finally found my «thing». But hey, I’ve got a lot of other good pictures that I wanted to use in the portfolio. Would you like to see them?
Let me know in the comments below.

Remember; None of these images are edited. But there is a few images I would like to edit, to see How they could become even better.

What have you been up to the last two weeks?
